Treatment Family Home
The Treatment Family Home is a voluntary program that parents can choose as an alternative for placement of a child in residential treatment. The program is collaborative, team-based program in which agrees to place a child in a treatment family home placement with trained treatment family home parents who assist the child and family in developing new parenting strategies to improve family relationships and keep the family together in the long term.
Parents do not give up custody of their child, but retain custody of their child and continue to be the decision makers in terms of treatment planning for their child. The program works closely with the child’s treating psychiatrist, therapist, community support specialist, school personnel and others to empower the child and family to make changes to improve family functioning.
The program typically lasts about six months and, after the first two to four weeks of the program, parents are expected to have their child home on weekends, holidays and special events. These visits are opportunities to try new strategies and monitor the success of the intervention.
